Happy PRIDE Month! Today and every day, we support and celebrate our LGBTQ+ Senior Community! We believe in love and are grateful to be a part of a community that also does.

Did you know that resources are available for the LGBTQ+ aging community at the national and local levels?

National Resources

At a National level, The National Resource Center on LGBTQ+ Aging is “focused on improving the quality of services and supports offered to lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender older adults, their families and caregivers.” They offer an array of services that are quite extensive and easy to access – including but not limited to the following:

  • Library – Collection of guides, articles, reports, and webinars best practice guides on LGBTQ+ aging.
  • Information and Referral Form – Finding and navigating aging services can be challenging. We provide information and referrals to LGBTQ+ older adults, their families, and care partners.
  • Technical Assistance Form – Providing technical assistance to aging network providers on best practices for supporting and including LGBTQ+ older adults, families, and care partners in aging services.
  • Education -Supporting the educational needs of LGBTQ+ older adults, families, care partners, community members, and the aging network.

Sarasota County

Project Pride Senior Services

“In Sarasota County, where more than a third of the population is 65 and older, the demand for services for the aging is high. Most of them grew up in an era when many families—usually the first source of comfort and respite—turned their backs on them. Indeed, one in five LGBT adults “cited fear of double discrimination [for being LGBT and older] as a significant concern about aging” in a recent national survey, according to the nonprofit National Center on Caregiving. This fear has often resulted in older LGBTQ individuals living their last years in isolation, not only bereft of help with caregiving and chronic illness but also an emotional connection.” (Project Pride)

Project Pride offers various resources and ways to get involved, including but not limited to a Food Delivery Program, LGBTQ Grief & Loss Support Group, and ways to volunteer. Check it out here.

Senior Friendship Centers

The Senior Friendship Center in Sarasota hosts Rainbow Connections, an LGBTQ+ Social, on the second Thursday of every month. Check it out here.

“Join us at Senior Friendship Centers for our vibrant monthly mixer for connection, collaboration and celebration. Each month we’ll invite an engaging member of the arts community to speak/ perform / present with our gathering in a casual Q&A setting.” (Senior Friendship Centers)

Pinellas County

BLS LGBTQ+ Elder Initiative Pinellas

“The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning plus (LGBTQ+) Elder Initiative builds bridges between the elder services market and the LGBTQ+ elder community to advocate, inform, and educate on behalf of LGBTQ+ elders.”

The BLS LGBTQ+ Elder Initiative Pinellas offers resources for seniors and their families and businesses. It also offers LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Training for service providers. Click here to learn more.

In addition, if you’re in the St. Pete area on June 23, check out the St Pete Pride Grand Central Street Fair.
