Do you know that on October 15, 2021, the open enrollment period for Medicare begins?

Mark your calendars, From October 15 through December 7 you can sign up for a Medicare plan, switch plans, or leave a plan.

What is Medicare and who qualifies?

Medicare is a health insurance program provided by the federal government for qualifying individuals, including people over the age of 65, those with certain disabilities, and individuals with end-stage kidney disease.

Did you know you can sign up for Medicare online?

Some people who meet certain conditions will automatically be enrolled in Medicare when they turn 65, but if are not automatically enrolled, you can fill out a Medicare application through the Social Security Website here.

What are the Parts of Medicare?

The original Medicare plan that individuals are enrolled through Social Security are Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) ad Medicare Part B (medical insurance).

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance): Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital stays. You generally don’t have to pay a monthly premium if you or your spouse paid qualifying Medicare taxes while working. If you do need to pay, the amount will be based on how long you paid Medicare taxes.

Medicare Part B (Medicare Insurance): Medicare Part B certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. Most people pay a standard premium for Part B. Those who reported income over a certain amount from 2 years prior will have an extra charge known as an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA).

What other supplemental plans are available?

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Medicare Advantage Plans are an alternative to Original Medicare and are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Medicare Part C covers everything that Part A and Part B do, but some plans offer additional coverage for dental, vision, and even fitness memberships. Each plan has different out-of-pocket costs and rules for how you get services can also differ.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Medicare Part D helps make prescription drug costs more affordable. The cost varies depending on the plan you choose.
